CPU Usage at 100% when PC boots up 1st time

I have noticed that every time I boot up my PC the first of the day, my PC seems to be very slow; checked Task Manager and it is at 100% CPU Usage. I always have to restart my PC so that it'll work normally. Checked the processes that run the most are MsMpEng.exe, svchost.exe and services.exe. I run Windows XP SP3 on Dell Inspiron 5100 with 512 MB of RAM. What seems to be wrong here? Just had my PC repaired and replaced its hard disk. This didn't happened before. I don't want to reinstall Windows all over again.

MsMpEng.exe is Windows Defender, Microsoft's antispyware program.  It's probably doing a scan first thing of the day.  If you go into Windows Defender, you can check the settings defaults and change when it runs, or set it to not do automatic checks at all.  But if you can just let it run, it will finish up and then CPU usage go back to normal.  Not sure but I think the default is to quick scan at 2 AM, and if PC is off then, it scans when first turned on after that.  You might try letting it run and see how long it does actually take.  If too long, change to settings to run at another time or just run it yourself manually occasionally.  But it is a good security tool that's not just wasting time.

What is  svchost.exe?  When I shut down my computer a notice always comes on that it isn't responding and do I want to "end now".

I've checked Windows Defender's settings and it is set to schedule a scan daily at 2:00AM which is the default setting. I tried to disable the automatic scheduled scan but still when I turn it off for the first time of the day, the system is still slow and the CPU Usage is at 100%. I always have to restart my computer so that it would run normally. I don't know why this happens. :(

nothing has changed. tried turning off windows defender and still whenever i turn on the computer it slows down till i restart it. one thing i have noticed is that the computer runs normally after i restart it. but when i shut down the computer and turn it back on after a few minutes, the computer slows down, taking 100% of cpu usage. i have already reformatted windows and still getting the same issue. not so sure if its an issue with memory though. the hard disk is new and just had my pc repaired for it. :(
