Crazy processor speed problems

Question

I have a 3 mghz Dimension 8400. End of March 2006 it suddenly started having stability problems and online gaming was v weird - slow motion etc. Spoke to Dell (India!) many times with little success. Under system properties the computer info is shown as Pentium 4 CPU 3 ghz (with another line below) : 4.43 ghz (this figure varies each boot performed) The second line is the problem. Does this indicate that the system thinks it can / should run at this speed? Dell did not recognise the problem but replaced motherboard and processor - no change . I have NOT overclocked the processor, and no other problems have occurred. Bizarrely it righted itself until yesterday - 2nd line was showing as 2.99 ghz and system / gaming was perfect. Now its showing as 4,43 again. Please help

Click start Run Type in 'dxdiag' in the box without the quotes. hit enter See what dxdiag reports as your processor speed.

Thanks. dxdiag shows speed as 3 ghz, as does cpucool, but...

cpuz, pc wizard 2006, rightmark, clockgen and sisoftware sandra all report it at 4.13 ghz (currently)

Nothing's easy is it?

I suspect it is an intermittent power supply problem somewhere - Dell said the problem is a "customer perception" in other words fupp** off

Instability of the cpu usually can be the result of excessive temps and or improper voltage.

It is probably not an instability problem.  The speed reported is computed on the fly and may have has some inaccuracies
