Data Execution Errors on new machine

Question

Having just transferred most of my files onto my new pc. When I try to open them, open folders, put old docs in the recycle bin, I get a Data Exceution Error! Which will then close whatever I'm doing ? Its an intermittent problem. Will eventually allow me to open the docs. I know that I can turn on Data Execution Errors in the System Properties control panel, under Advanced and Performance, but basically I want to turn this off as its very frustrating. Any advice ?
