goatlady1965,

What specific program prompts the DEP message? You mentioned Windows Explorer in your initial post but that can cover a multitude of things. If you go into Help and Support and search on DEP you will see instructions for methods of disabling Data Execution Prevention for a specific program. Have you clicked a link for more information on the window that asks if you wish to send a report to Microsoft?

To turn off DEP, you could (if you can get to it) edit the boot.ini file in Notepad, Boot.ini  is in C:\

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;875352

If you can open boot.ini, it will look something like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

[yours might have a different partition number: leave that as it is; also instead of Optin, you might have OptOut or AlwaysOn]

change the NoExecute switch to /NoExecute=AlwaysOff

Save the change.

Reboot.

But you should still get rid of Newdot (and I suggest also that screensaver). You could also try going into safe mode, both to remove newdot and to change the boot.ijni file: restart the computer and immediately repeatedly tap F8 (before Windows starts loading), then choose safe mode.

Don't forget to edit the boot.ini file back to what it was after your PC is cleaned up.
