Default Email Client not Properly Installed

Question

When I click on an email link within a webpage, I get the message 'Cannot perform this function because the default email client is not properly installed.'   I am running Windows XP, and I have the same problem when using either IE6 or IE7.  This is a relatively new problem for me.  I was always able to use the hyperlinks in the past.   I have seen many postings on many bulletin boards about this, and I have tried all the 'fixes' I could, but to no avail.   Microsoft is of no help, and doesn't really even respond with an answer to the question.  How can I fix this?  It's driving me crazy!!   Thanks,

can you give us the exact error message that you are getting from your outlook?

the default email client for windows XP is the MS outlook express. you should configure it according to your email providers POP3 and SMTP settings...   pullup outlook>tools>account settings

Outlook Express does not seem to be functioning properly.  When I select it in IE to be my default email, nothing changes.   I cannot open and use Express, it gives me error messages and I have not been able to find a way to re-install it.  However, that may be a side issue because I think that was fine when this problem first began.

I get two messages.  One says it is unable to intilize the global options manager and the other says it is unable to initilize the MSOE.DLL

You need to reinstall your outlook for that problem...because one of its important part that needs it to run correctly is corrupted. However you cant remove outlook express from Add/remove program...

to reinstall Outlook Express

perform these steps:

Click the Start button, and then click Search.
The Search Results window appears.

Click All files and folders.

Type msoe50.inf in the first search field.

Verify the Look In box has the (X: ) drive selected, where X is the drive letter for the primary partiation.(usually the drive letter is C: )

Click the Search button.

Right-click the file and left-click Install.

Repeat steps 2-5 for file Wab50.inf

Nope, that didn't work.  It called for the Windows XP disks, which I found, but the problem still exists and I'm still getting the same error messages from Outlook Express.   In addition, after reinstalling XP, it caused all sorts of weird problems.  All of the sudden IE7 disappeared, leaving IE6, but everytime I clicked on any link or typed into the search bar, it would open another case of IE6 that wouldn't respond, and then kept opening more and more windows until I was able to stop it.    I fixed that problem when someone gave me a copy of Firefox, which I installed and used to get to Windows to download IE7 again.   Now, my print function is all messed up.  I print one document and it seems to hang in the queue, as if it didn't fully print, and then I can't print anything else unless I re-boot the computer.   All this for a problem everyone seems to think was caused by Microsoft to begin with and they won't even address it!
