Defrag over a defrag

I defraged my dell (Dimension 3000). Before I knew it was done, someone pushed the defrag again.  I wasn't aware until it was too late.  I think I need to reformat - and reinstall software.  Could someone give me the best steps to take?

Thanks

What problem or problems are you having? Tell what you have done to fix the problem.

I've made backups of everything I could.  I know I've lost files.
I've tried a recovery file program, and it showed a lot of corrupt and overwritten files.  I think I have the most important things that I need, I just want to get the computer back to a usable place.

I would think that if you tried to run a second instance of defrag simultaneosuly, you would get the lessage that another instance is running and wait for that one to stop before proceeding.

Hmmm...   That's definitely a new one to me. I just tried to replicate your situation and I can't see how it's even possible.
I ran Disk Defrag and while it was defragging, I opened up another Disk Defrag simultaneously with the one already running...  it was not possible.  I get a warning box ...  " This version of Disk Defragmenter does not support more than one instance ".

Are you sure that is what caused your troubles ???  It doesn't look to be possible to run two defrags simultaneously...

Thanks for your response.

I must have mis-stated. I ran a defrag and I thought that the computer had to be restarted to get "pointers" to the right place.  My defrag was finished and another was immediately started.

Drive c: was very full thus the computer running extreemly slow.  I had to delete some things to do a defrag.  There were things missing on the system - so I figured it was the 2nd defrag.

I paid too much for a lost file finding program and found that there were many file overwritten and partially therer.  Don't know how that happened if it wasn't the defrag.

Thanks for your response.

I had just finished a defrag and then another one was run immediately.  I thought you had to restart the computer for the "pointers" to get set.  Is this not a problem?  The computer only had 4 g left on it and it was impossibly slow.  I had to delete things to try to get a defag to even run.  Then it seemed like things were missing.

I paid too much to get a program to check for lost files.  There were lots of them.  That's why I figured it was the defrag.

What do you think?

I don't understand any of this one;  sorry....:smileysad:  But I've never heard of Windows Defrag removing critical or personal files. That's a new one to me........

You might be better off trying to save whatever personal files you can and just try a new reinstall of Windows. It sounds like you might have missing and/or corrupt Windows files; and who know's what else.  If your computer is all filled to capacity you must have a small harddrive capacity or else you have tons and tons of files on it... and there's always the possibility of viri and malwares too.

Personally.....  If the computer is running fine and has no hardware problems, I'd  reinstall Windows and start over.

You might consider taking the computer to a shop and have it done correctly. Or...   see if you have the option of using the Dell PC restore by Symantec. It all depends on when your computer was bought.
