Defrag problem on Windows 98 Second Edition
I recently had a problem on my old computer which is a Pentium 3 with 512MB ram and 40 GB hard drive. I haven't used it recently as I have bought a new dimension.
When I defrag it starts and goes 10, 40, 80 % and then stops and starts over again from the beginning. Each subsequent time it advances a little more. I did notice that the drive was quite fragmented. This is the first time it happened. I scanned disked and turn off all windows operations while defragging. The computer worked fine before and after defragging. Now it defrags completely when I defrag. I wonder if that's an indication any hard drive problems. Everything seems to work normal with no problems.
I wonder if anyone has ever experienced this strange occurence. My first.
Thanks ,
Jerry

I'm using the standard Windows defragmenter. I've never had this happen before over many years. If it happens again I will try another one.
Thank you for your input.

Steve,
Thank you for your article. I didn't turn off my cable modem, didn't close the programs in crt alt del. Now, I realize that some program was accessing my computer. Very valuable article for me and I really learned something important. Normally I just turn off the program icons in the right task bar, and turn off my modem. This time I didn't turn off my modem. With all the programs running in the background I understand.

You also might want to run defrag in safe mode. This prevents most drivers and programs from loading. This will allow more files to be defragged (open files can't be defragged).

Cliff,
Good point! I learn things everyday from "you helpful" persons.
Thank you and I'll use that tip.

you also can restart in dos mode and then type " cd\windows\command" (enter key) then type scandisk For scandisk or defrag to defrag and it wont be interupted.

You can run scandisk in DOS mode, but you can't run defrag in DOS mode, since it is a Windows program. You can, however, run either in Safe Mode without any interference from background programs.

Will this work properly if the hard drive is formatted in FAT32? I don't remember the exact circumstances, but I do remember screwing things up by defragging in DOS mode.
