delay in opening application

I am having a problem with a delay of 30 - 60 seconds following a mouse click to the opening of an application, email or internet.  It also happens when I click from site to site while on the internet.  It is happening on and off line.  This makes for very slow and frustrating computing.

My computer is a Dell 8400 with Windows XP Home 2002, service pack 3.  For firewall and antivirus/antispyware, I'm using ZoneAlarm 8.0.  I've tried shutting down ZoneAlarm, which didn't make a difference.  The windows firewall is disabled.  I checked the connection with my internet provider and ran a speed test.  I've run CCleaner, SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, Spybot & Ad-Aware.  I've used disk cleanup and defragmenter.  All file sharing software has been removed.

I would appreciate any help with this problem.

Thank you.

Hi Jesse L, Larry R and Bell Boy
I took my computer to a technician and asked for more RAM to be installed.  The technician said that one of the capacitors on the motherboard was beginning to wear out.  She said that she would have to replace the motherboard before putting more RAM in with an estimated cost $300 for both.  She suggested that I would be better off putting that money towards a new computer.  So, I guess I'll start saving for a new one rather than put lots of money into my old one.  I want to thank Bell Boy, Larry R and Jesse L for your help and suggestions.  If nothing else, I sure know a lot more about computers!

Hi again Crab Apple

Ohhhhh dear not so good news   :emotion-60:

You may want to post a new thread over in General Hardware Forum here & get a second opinion about MOBO capacitor beginning to wear out & installing additional RAM (typically a reasonably easy DIY job)

Otherwise agree, a $300 repair job = buy a new computer
