Dell factory loaded McAfee software not saving updates...

Hi,

I have a 8250 on XP platform with McAfee virus scan and firewall that came preloaded from Dell. I've kept it very well updated and on fairly tight security, and for the most part, I've had few problems with it (once I had a firewall issue that was blocking my streaming media, so I reinstalled to fix it, which luckily worked that time), until now. Recently, every time I start up my PC McAfee appears to be automatically downloading and instaling the exact same update(s), but never saves it's status for the next time I start up my PC. I've even tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling the whole McAfee package, but that didn't help. That in itself is quite anoying, but It also completely prevents me from using my cable connection until it has gone through the whole updating process each time. It does not attempt to do this after a restart, only a fresh boot, and only on the next day. It usually does not go through that again on the same date after it has done it once, which I suspect may be because it looks for the last date it has been updated, and sees no need in checking... Any ideas? Thanks!

you could try disableing auto update and then manually run the live update and see if that fixes the problem, just a suggestion, not sure if it will fix the problem.

That's a very good idea! I hadn't even thought of doing that. I'll try it and see. Thanks very much! :)

Well, that didn't end up helping, but I found out that it's problem was somehow related to the other problem I was having where my cable modem wasn't initializing at startup. A member of this board suggested I leave my modem plugged in and turned on all the time, rather than keeping it on the power strip I used to turn on and off all of my stuff at once where it was having to load up each time I turned on the power switch, and that seemed to stop the whole problem for both issues. :)
