It is unfortunate that the speakers don’t work after sleep. Request you to try use the below links and update audio and video drivers which might help:
thanks for your suggestions, i reinstalled all audio drivers but to no effect. i have come upon another temporary solution. If i connect the lapotop to its charger and then put it to sleep/hibernate/etc. it will work when i wake it/turn it on/etc. i feel like it is not the audio driver, rather like a different driver, maybe one that connects the audio to the speaker fails after sleep or hibernation, then resets and fixes itself after about an hour or so. anymore feedback would be wonderful, and thanks for such quick response!
P.S. unfortunately, the drivers from the dell site you provided have been loading for quite some time i agreed to the terms and now they just say initializing and installing....wait one just said failed and one is still loading, i will click retry, but doesnt look to good. any suggestions?
If none of the above steps work, you follow the below steps and perform a PC restore where the computer will go back to the factory state:
(1) Plug in the AC adapter.
(2) Point to the right hand corner of the screen to bring up the charms bar.
(3) Click Settings.
(4) Select ‘PC settings, In the PC settings window, select ‘General’.
(5) Once “General is selected, on the right side scroll down to click on ‘Restart Now’ under Advanced settings’
(6) In the next screen click on ‘Trouble shoot’.
(7) Click the Dell Backup and Recovery icon.
(8) The system restarts and comes back up, click ‘Next’ on the Dell Backup and Recovery Screen.
(9) The system would be checked to see if the smart repair option can fix the issue, click ‘Next’ once this is done.
(10) You will be prompted to select the backup to be used, click the factory image option or select from one of the backups. Click Next.
(11) You will be prompted to back up your files, if needed do so by selecting the option ‘Yes, backup my personal files’ (Make sure to have an external backup hard drive handy.) or select No, Erase my files.
(12) The system goes ahead and completes the restore of the operating system. Click Restart when prompted.
(13) Follow the on-screen instructions to setup the system with windows.
Note: Please backup the data before attempting this.
If you have any other questions do reply to the same thread.
thank you very much for all of suggestions. i have tried the audio driver downloads in a different browser and they have not worked. maybe you could tell me which browser they work in? and unfortunately the chipset had no effect either. i installed the update package from the chipset and it did nothing. and i have also reset this laptop to factory setting when i first experienced this problem and nothing had changed. this is a very strange problem and im afraid if i send it to tell for maintenance they will just try to fix the problem or make it worse, instead or refunding it or sending me a new one. i really like the laptop but i would like everything to work if i paid for one. if you had anymore options or any idea of what this problem is, please reply.
Apologies for the delayed response. I am checking with our internal team for better inputs so request you to wait for a couple of days. I will get back to you with some more suggestions.
I am also facing a similar issue wherein my Dell Inspiron 15R speakers are not working when ever i connect my dongle with the system . Kindly provide some inputs to resolve this issue or else if its a hardware problem i can use my warranty which is about to get over in august.
Since upgrading to Windows 8 recently, I too am experiencing similar problems with my speakers going out. I know that when I call Dell for warranty service, they will ask me to send the machine in, which will mean being out of service for a week; I'm hoping to be able to resolve things without resorting to that...
AGH! It's back just as suddenly as it originally vanished!!
Like an earlier thread, perhaps it makes a difference if the computer has been turned off and on again, but not for about an hour??? That can't be right.
Am having same issue with relatively new Dell laptop, windows 8. All of a sudden, I have no sound. Have checked and re-checked, mute, speaker level etc., have uninstalled and reinstalled Realtek High Def Audio Driver. Have had no success installing driver directly from Dell site -- log reads that driver is same as most current. Interestingly, it showed that even when there was no driver installed -- had to install driver directly from Realtek. Have read every thread I can find on problem. Only solution I have not tried is the BIOS change as noted in this thread last year. Am afraid to do that given another post that says if I do it and it wrecks the motherboard I'm out of luck, whereas if a Dell tech tells me to then they will replace.
I have an Inspiron 5721 laptop & having a similar problem with my sound. When I start up the system "cold" I get no "Windows" sound at bootup & when the system finishes booting the sound does not work. If I then restart the system I get the Windows sound & the sound works fine when the system starts. Intermittently the sound will stop working & I have to restart again. I checked & I have the latest sound drivers (Realtek). I ran diagnostics & it says sound is working.
I am running Win 8 & have not upgraded to 8.1 as I am afraid it might create new problems. This OS is truly the "New Vista" & only hope 9.0 (or whatever MS is going to call it) will be an improvement!
My dell inspiron 14 have lots of problem, my Google chrome is not working and i am also having same problem related to the sound, i can heard sound by other devices like speakers, headphone. Some time my laptop display get blank, when i dint find any option i use to open the battery so that i will get some thing on my screen so that i can opreat my laptop, i am very serious window 8 is not working well specially in dell laptops i really wasted my money.

Hi inspiron 3521 tech,
Request you to use the below link and update BIOS:
http://dell.to/16glgVI
Then you may set the power plan to maximum or high by following the below steps:
(1) Click start
(2) Type power options in the search box and hit enter.
(3) In the power options screen, select high performance (it changes for battery and AC Adaptor).
Also let me know which application are you using to play sound? You may try using a different application and check it still persists.

I am having the exact same problem. This is very frustrating. And the laptop is barely 5 months old.
