Dell System Restore....Gone?

I own a Dimension 5150, originally shipped with XP Home and running fine until this week.

A error began occuring at boot up of XP.  The system still started and reached the standard idle desktop screen but any processes scheduled to start at bootup failed.  Any attempt to run an application also failed.  The result was always the same- some sort unhandled exception.

I am out of state at the moment and any rescue CDs are back home and I do not have access to them at present.

I next used my employers XP Pro install CDs to do a non-destructive OS install.  I was able to use the Driver Reset left over from the old XP Home installation to restore drivers specific to my system.

THEN (ahem...) I learn there is a Dell System Restore partition on this drive.  Ctrl-F11 now does not acivate this Dell/Symantic application, presumably as it is not shipped with XP Pro.  My DSR partition is still on this drive- is there anyway to use this partrition to return my PC back to the original OS XP Home shipped state?  Possible to do so without any CD tools that may have been shipped with the PC?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Unfortunately, the Repair option failed.  When executed, the procedure copied drivers, started up and then dumped to a command line.  I suspect this occured because I was using the Dell OEM XP Pro reinstallation CD instead of a Dell OEM XP Home CD appropriate for this specific make and model of my PC.

So a clean, non-destructive install was performed next.

I'll look at the link you posted in more detail and hopefully will be able to get the DSR to execute properly.

Thanks.

If you performed a "Repair" installation of Windows, your restore partition may still be on the drive.  To find out you will need to study this:

Dan Goodell is a recognized expert on this and is definitely the best source of info on it.
