Hi carobstri,

You can create a recovery discs on the new computer so that you can restore the system to factory state in future with the original hard drive shipped with the system. Please follow the steps mentioned below to create recovery discs.

1.                   Point to the right of the screen and when the charms bar comes up, click Search then type in Dell Backup and Recovery. Click Dell Backup and Recovery.

2.                   Click the Reinstall Disks tile.

3.                   Click Factory Backup.

4.                   Select either USB Flash Drive or Discs as per your requirement. Ensure to connect the USB Flash Drive or put blank media into the optical drive.

5.                   Click Continue.

6.                   Click Start.

7.                   The factory image is created on the USB flash drive or disc, click OK once done.

8.                   Also, You can create recovery discs for ‘OS Media’ and ‘Apps & Drivers’

9.                   Pleasemake sure the media you have created is kept is a safe location for future utilization.

Please let me know if this helps.

Because its a bootable USB and not a bootable DVD, copying the files over directly to a .iso will likely result in a .iso that is non-bootable.

I haven't fully tested with a UEFI install or used it with a Dell Reinstallation USB but the following might help:

http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-microsoft-windows-and-office/download-microsoft-windows/download-windows-8-1-iso/creating-a-bootable-iso-with-an-ei-cfg-and-pid-txt-file/

Ignore extracting the ,iso and the Adding the EI.cfg file and PID.txt (first 2 headings).

Follow reconstructing the .iso and Burning the Reconstructed .iso to DVD (not sure if it'll work with UEFI as mentioned). Also try the Creating a Bootable USB using the reconstructed .iso.

Let me know how you get along as I'm very interested but don't have the hardware to test at the moment.

OK, how does one create discs for the OS Media and Apps and drivers. I did my recovery USB drive and had a friend of mine do the same on his Dell Venue Pro 11. Then...his machine went bad and we reinstalled his OS off the recovery drive and his touch drivers, obviously, didn't install because he couldn't swipe. I was under the assumption that any extras like drivers, etc were included in the recovery media.

Not exactly on topic but, no, the drivers are not included in the recovery media.  There is separate media for that.

I'll have to make time to try this but it might not be until next week.  I don't really see to much of a different to this method than what I tried but I'll give it a shot anyway and report back.

One thing I guess I failed to mention is that the system shipped with Windows 7.  What I'm trying to accomplish is basically for a later date as I don't trust the flash drive for an extended period of time.  They are not exactly know for reliability.  Not to mention is will most likely get lost.

I'm sorry for the off topic but I haven't seen this question in the forums. Could you tell me if Dell is supplying the free upgrade for purchasers of systems bought in November 2013 with windows 8. Thanks and sorry for jumping in.

I don't know.  But if I were to guess I would say I doubt it.

Question...

This procedure uses the "Windows 7 .iso USB/DVD Download Tool".  According to documentation, this tool is ONLY for use with Windows 7.  Do you know for sure if it works with Windows 8/8.1?  I believe there might be a tool from MS for Windows 8 but I'm not sure.

Probably not because of Microsoft's awful deployment of Windows 8.1...

Microsoft failed to provide Windows 8.1 as a standalone update forcing it through a buggy store.

Microsoft made Windows 8.1 media reject Windows 8.0 product keys including the BIOS embedded system locked preinstallation keys.

Thus even if Dell sent you out a Windows 8.1 Reinstallation DVD/USB your product key would be rejected at installation. There are unofficial workarounds around this and I have pieced them together here:

However its unlikely you will get Windows 8.1 media from Dell due to the difficulties imposed by Microsoft.

Dell is sending out 8.1 media.  I'm looking at one right now.  It's just that they are not providing it on DVD.  It is only available on the USB sticks.  Which translates to the initial post in this thread.  At least for me.

Thank you so much. I've got it.

I still want to return my new Dell to them because I am not happy with what Dell's doing, they hi-jacked customers'  Windows copies for ransom. There will be no more Dell in my home from now.

It works with Vista, 8.0 and 8.1 however the guides have been updated to use Rufus instead of this tool which has better results.
