Dell XP won't boot

I've reformatted but can't get the system to reboot normally. It keeps loading a black screen that says strike f1 or f2. Neither of these options work. Someone please tell me what to do.  XP home on 2400 system, brand new.

I did format the installed partition, very carefully. What caused this is that I messed with my registry and this caused my previous windows installation to become corrupt.I had to delete the factory installed partition and install a new one.I've tried the repair option to no avail. Nothing I do gets windows to restart normally. What could cause this?I'm using the reinstallation cd that came with this brand new PC.

Boot from the XP CD to see whether Windows set-up recognizes an installed version of Windows.  To do that, you can either proceed through the screens until set-up tells you that you have a version of Windows on your computer and asks you what you want to do; OR, you can go into the Recovery Console to see if it recognizes anything that can be repaired.  If an installed version of Windows is recognized, you could try a Repair Re-install.  If an installed version of Windows is not recognized, then your best bet would be to do a new install, telling it to format the installation partition.  I apologize for saying this, but it almost sounds as if you did not re-install Windows after formatting; certainly, if you did, the installation appears to have failed for some reason.

Yes! I think I'm getting somewhere! I did as you said and found out it wasn't set to boot from the hard drive. It is now booting automatically when I say to restart! Thank you, everyone! I'll keep you posted on my progress! I'm now installing drivers etc. from Resource CD.

if you have a bootable win 98 floppy you can boot to that and run fdisk which will let you see it your primary partition is active.

I don't think you can check if Partition is marked as Active unless you have an XP OS installed.

When you deleted the factory installed partition , did you also delete the factory installed FAT partition along with the XP partition.?
You could check the BIOS setup by pressing F2 when startup shows the DELL logo screen , without the XP CD inserted.
Check BIOS is still set to 1st boot from CD & Exit with Save.

You could also try running the DELL Diagnostics by booting from Drivers & Utilities (Resource) CD with CD as 1st boot device.

Since its new you could call DELL support or Sales if you think the reinstalllation CD is faulty.

I see from DELL info you can use BIOS setup program to only change the boot device for current boot only or for all futures boots.
The DELL info screen display is confusing to me as it says you 1st press F2 in both cases & for current boot only it says  in
http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dim2400/en/sm_en/syssetup.htm#1105696

" 3. At the bottom of the menu, enter the number of the device that is to be used for the current boot only."

If this is true has you set all future boot to use CD or only current boot. ?

There is also a setting for "OS Install Mode" . ?
