Dem DMA Blues???

I recently discovered that I did not have DMA set for my HD's  I have 3 differant systems I'm working on and I'm using W98SE and windows ME.  I looked into the System properties/device manager (tab)/ under the HD's and checked the box for DMA, saved it and rebooted.
My question is... is there anything else that I need to do to fine tune the DMA settings for the HD's???

Also, reguarding DVD/Cd rom drives.  when installing a dvd player it said that DMA only needed to be selected on one of the devices to make it active??? This confused me a lot.  How do I determin if my 'older' CDrom is DMA compatable? ( have a program called PC wizard, so I did find that DMA was an option for BOTH HD's but when I try to look at the CD rom and the DVD drive the program locks up.)  Will errors result in turning on DMA for both of the rom drives? Under windows ME/98se is there anything special that needs to be done to turn DMA on for cd roms or DVD drives?

-thanks
