dimension 4400 slow

I'm trying to figure out why my parents computer is so slow.  It's a dell demension 4400, running XP.  We convinced them to lose aol and go to cable.  I just uninstalled norton antivirus and loaded trend micro 2007.  It's still reeaaallly slow.  I think it's worse than aol dial up.  They also had an older version of registry mechanic that I ran, and that too seemed to make it worse.  Please help they're threatening to go back to aol dial up!

I had a 4400 before I got my 410. Over the time I had it I noticed that, (1.) The more Windows update's it recived the slower it ran. (2.) it only had 512mb of ram, And I didn't think it was worth it to buy more . (3.) Out of date Video card and drivers,Same deal I didn't think it was worth it to spend more on a new card. The machine never missed a beat and could always be counted on, If you didn't mind counting slow. The only reason I got another Dell, Was the great service I got out of the 4400.  I hope some of this helps. Tele2

You can use pest removers to check the drive for malware(Spybot or Ad-Aware)
You can also check to see how many programs are starting when windows starts.(msconfig)
Now that you have loaded Trend Micro, have you scanned the drive with it?
Turn off screensaver.
Do a check disk.
Try a defrag in safe mode.
Run cleaner ( CCleaner)

All the above can be Googled.
