When I try to load The Sims 2, I get this error message

BUT I have installed DirectX.  What else do I need to do?

Is your video card (graphics adapter/graphics card) a DirectX 9 compatible video card?  You don't say which model computer you have, but only video cards that have come out in the last year or so are compatible with all of the features of DirectX 9.

My computer is a Dimension 2400.  I got it a little more than a year ago.  I also recently restarted with the Windows XP reboot disk, if that might have something to do with the problem.

What can be done?

You might want to post your question in the Dimension - Video forum.  All I can tell you is that the 2400 is a low end computer, with a cheap built-in video card that was not designed for the latest and greatest games.   Your video adapter is an Intel Graphics Extreme video adapter and shares video memory with the main memory on your motherboard.  You might check the specs on the game to see if it is one of the one's listed as being compatilble with the game.
