Disk activity every one second

My Windows XP Pro system on OptiPlex GX400 has disk activity every second.  The green light that shows when the hard drive is being used flashes about once per second, even when the system is basically sitting at idle and I am not doing anything.

Is there some component in XP that does this normally?  I have MS Office installed, but I removed the shortcut in the Startup Folder.

Is there a way to monitor what is happening?  The only thing I know to do in the way of monitoring is press Ctl-Alt-Delete to start the Windows Task Manager.  That shows that EXPLORER.EXE is using 1% of the CPU.

I run Norton AntiVirus 2003, and I run the AdsGone popup blocker.  I don't know if they are causing the constant disk usage.

I don't remember that the system did this in the "past".  It seems like that at some time within the last few weeks this behavior started.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

Record a list of all the processes running and compare them against a list at www.blackviper.com to see what each one is.

This sounds more like Network Activity (Requests) than anything else.

If you have a good firewall like Zone Alarm installed I suggest you do an AdAware scan. Free download if you don't have it.

Didn't read the above link but you have Search  "Indexing Service" enabled as it works when Computer idle.

Creeper --

Thanks -- yes, the thread that you linked me to is exactly what is happening with my Dell.  I will stop worrying about it now that I know that the hard disk is not being constantly used.  The blinking light I can live with.
