Disk Clean-up

My sister-in-law can't get her disk clean-up to work. When she clicks on it, it only goes to 3 bars and then freezes up. What does she need to do to get it to work? Thanx for your help!

It may appear to "freeze" if disk cleanup has not been run for a while or if the files XP wants to clean are many.  The major larger areas are: Temp Folder files, Temp Internet Files, and Recycle Bin.  I would recommend before running Disk Cleanup again to 1) Open Recycle Bin and delete all files there. 2) open Internet Properties through Control Panel and deleting all files there.  Then try running the Disk Cleanup (aka cleanmgr from the RUN command).  In addition if she has Win XP Pro or the NTFS file system in XP Home the Disk Clean utility will also try to clean up seldom used files by compressing them.  In this case if the "compress files" option is present in her list of choices - have her uncheck it.  The disk cleanup should then run faster.

jjagsmama,

This is a common problem. The file here will correct it.

My disk Clean-up just sits and not doing anything.  I guess it is because I have over 3 million files on the temporary internet files.  I can't delete them.  Is there a better way to do this task?

When you say you can't delete them, have you tried in IE, Tools, internet options, general tab, delete files; in the box that opens check 'delete offline content', click OK.
