Disk Cleanup Slow

Question

My home edition  xp dimension has started to perform very slowly.  I started disk cleanup and it has been running for over 24 hours; no indication that it is ready to complete calculating and scanning the compressed old files.  How can I tell if it is working and if it is, will it solve and/or speed up the performance of my computer.  Thanks.

XGI, You should be able to correct the problem with Disk Cleanup with the little file here.

Thank you Denny, you solved my problem.   My disk is now cleaned up I will also incorporate the other suggestions you provided.  Thanks again.  I am glad I found this forum.  It is great.
