Disk defrag

I am having problems with defraging my c: drive. it will defrag but when it is done it states that certain files could not be defraged. One of the files is \Windows\system 32\idspeed.html. The problem is this file takes up 23 gigabytes which is most of what is on my c: drive. When I analyze the drive after it tells me that the c: drive needs defragging again but repeats the same thing. What am I doing wrong.

Four questions, 1 - How big is your drive?  2 - How much free space do you have on it? 3 - What O/S are you using? 4 - Do you know what the file (idspeed.html) is?

Hey thanks for responding,

The size of the disk is 60 gigs. I have 23 gigs of free space. The os is Win xp home. The file I am not so sure about. Shen I did a search it placed an explorer icon next to it. Uner properties it said the size of the file was 27 gigs but underneath that it said siz on disk 3.06 gigs. Hope that helps.

Try using a different defrag program. I would recommend DiskKeeper Pro. They offer a free trial download so you can test it before you purchase. Should solve your problem.

Benthren,

I would be quite concerned about having a 23 Gb html file on your hard drive.  I did a search for the filename using a google and google groups and found a couple of hits about other people finding this large file on their hard drive, but no hit suggesting ways to get rid of it.  Some suggest it might be the result of a virus, so you might want to run a full system scan with antivirus software with up to date virus definitions.   The reports also stated that the file couldn't be deleted because it was in use by a running process.  Since an html file should be pure text, you might want to try deleting it from Safe Mode.  It is way too big for the recycle bin, so you won't be able to recover the file if it is really needed.  Still, I can't imagine any legitimate process that would create a 23 Gb html file.

I definitely wouldn't tolerate a 23GB or even 3GB file on my box without knowing what it is ...
There are many things you could "do" to it. But some of them may break something.
You could try to disconnect from the Internet, end all nonessential processes using Task Manager, and then inspect the file (Open, check Properties, etc.)

If it doesn't work, try the same thing in Safe Mode, or just move the file using MoveOnBoot:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/moveonboot.html

Then see if it gets recreated in the original folder ...
If after moving it all your programs work ok, delete it using the same utility in a week or two.

BTW, do you have Service Pack 1 or 2 (right-click My Computer -> select Properties)?
