Disk Defragmenter

I have been unable to find out how to cancel and re-instate the Task Bar and System Tray on my Desktop in order to be able to run Disk Defragmenter.  Can you help me on this?

My computer is a Dell Dimension 4100 with Windows Millenium Operating System.

Thanks very much.

If you mean that the taskbar is simply hidden, you should be able to move the mouse pointer to where the taskbar usually is located and it should pop up. Maybe I don't understand the question.

Just remembered, when I used Me, I had the best results running the disk defragmenter from safe mode.

Thanks for your reply.

My Taskbar and System Tray are not hidden.  I understand I have to somehow cancel the icons in the Taskbar and System Tray, then run Disk Defragmenter and, after that, reinstate the Taskbar and System Tray icons as they were before.  I, perhaps, misunderstand, but if that's what is required, I need to know how to do it.  Thanks very much for your help.

I now understand your meaning. Just like the link that Denny gave, all you have to do is stop all programs. Just end any open programs you are running. You have to end the screen saver as this will be a program that will be started. As the link said, run disk clean up, scan disk, delete temporary internet files. Then as I said, I always had the best luck running disk defragmenter from safe mode. When I didn't, in Me, the defragmenter would constantly restart. I never changed or closed any icon in the system tray. Hope this helps.

As you'll see, I have written back to Denny with a question, and when I receive his answer it appears the problem will be solved.

I have noted your advice about running from the Safe Mode.

Thanks for your help.

Denny Denham:

Thanks for your response.

Here are the items in my Close Programs box.  As you mention, System Tray is listed, but not Explorer.  Could Explorer be under one of the other names in the following list?  This seems important so I wanted to be sure.

Quick Launch, Creative Launcher, Ccaap, Wkcalrem, Creatcd, Rundll32, Loadqm, Devldr16, Directcd, Em_exec, Motmon, Mm_tray, Systray, Hpodlb08, Speedkey, Aoltray

Thanks again for helping me.  It's a mystery to me as I appear to have been able to run Scan Disk and Disk Defragmenter up to now without eliminating any files or doing anything.   I certainly agree that the programs started over repeatedly, but eventually were able to complete (as far as I know) after considerable time.  I never knew the reason for this and should have questioned it before.  I'm curious now as to how the programs were actually able to complete if they really did.  Do you have any ideas on this?

StewartFluney,

The absence of Explorer (and sometimes Systray) in the Close Program box on some systems is an oddity which has been around for several years. For all practical purposes, Explorer is Windows, so if Windows is running Explorer is by definition. Since it does not need to be terminated prior to running Scandisk or Defrag, its absence is no cause for concern.

Sorry to trouble you again, but I'm having trouble trying to start my computer in the Safe Mode.  I followed instructions I had in a book; i.e., start up computer while holding down the Control Key.  Actually, I was successful once to the point of having the Startup Menu on the screen, but I think I lifted my finger off the Control Key before pressing 3 on the keyboard and the screen immediately loaded with Windows.

I tried several times after that to bring up the Safe Mode, but have been unsuccessful.  Can you help me.  Thanks very much.

P.S. -When I get into Safe Mode, how do I activate Disk Defragmenter from there?  In the few seconds the Start Menu was on the screen I could not detect this.  Thanks again.

You need to hit F8 key as the blue logo starts when you start your computer. Then you select safe mode, by using the arrow keys and press enter. Your computer will come to the safe mode display, which will look just like your desktop except that not all the programs startup. You will see it is just like your desktop, start, accessories, system tools, defragmenter. When you are through, just shutdown or restart like normal, and when your computer starts again, it will go to the normal desktop. Sorry about being slow to respond. Hope this helps.
