Display driver problem

Hi,

I'm running XP SP2 on a dimension 4700 with a E1713FP ( flat panel ) display, & builtin Intel 915G Express chipset. The problem I'm having is I get "cannot display this video mode" error messages when running some apps. I know the resolution is supported. When I go into device manager, under display, I see 2 instances of "default display". I tried deleting them, and installing the driver that came on the display CD, and I get one instance of "default display" and below it "Dell E173FP". I still get the error message cannot display this video mode". I read somewhere that this error can be caused by the system using "default display", instead of the driver designed for the monitor, since the default display can only run in the native mode.  Anyone seen this behaviour before? Any ideas on how to fix it?

Thanks,

Jay

I wonder if this is a Direct X problem, rather than a video driver issue?  Do you have the latest Direct X updates?  I think the latest is Direct X 9c.  If not, you can download it from Microsoft.

What is being shown in the Display Properties/Settings?

RIGHT click in an empty space on the desktop (screen) then LEFT click on Properties.  Clcik the Settings Tab.  If it is set correctly the Dell display will be shown as the Display.  This panel, on some video types, will allow you to change resolution, and other parameters.  Have you tried this?

I only show one Monitor, my monitor model, in the Windows Device Manager.  If you have both a default and the Dell monitor shown in the "Monitor" category in the Windows device manager, delete the default.

Fireberd,

I've deleted the instances of "default monitor" several times, it keeps coming back.  In the desktop display monitor properties, it shows "default monitor". I'm at the point where I'm about ready to just reload the OS. It's garbage, but I've reached my limit t/s this.

Are you sure the problem is with the monitor and not the video card? What video card are you using and is it configured correctly? Make sure video card shows up correctly in the device manager and then look through it's control panel for things that might affect it's ability to recognize the monitor and the resolution settings you want.

My nvidia 6800 video card in 8400 refused to recognize (old) sony monitor at first. It showed up as "default analog display". Some fiddling with the card's software fixed it, though not entirely sure what change made it work. Now card reports "sony analog display" and display device manager lists the correct sony model number. All the monitor's resolution settings and features became available after that.

Hi Ron,

The video is a onboard Intel 915G Express. There are no reported issues in device manager.
