Display lags keyboard - HELP

I have a Inspiron 6400, with 2Gb memory running Windows XP and a few days ago it the display started to lag the keyboard input by 6 - 10 characters.  This happens in all applications including typing a http address.
XP is up to date with all Microsoft patches applied.
I have checked for Virus and Spyware infections but found nothing.
Accessability is set to normal.
The problem does not occur if I run in Safe Mode.
I've tried with the Firewall/Virus switched off - no different.
Is there a setting somewhere in XP that I've set.  It looks like each character is being checked as I type.

Without knowing how you checked for virus and spyware infections (no single program finds all such parasites), it's difficult to say that virus/spyware issues are not at play here.  Since the problem does not occur in Safe Mode, it appears that something running in the background might be responsible.   Many of these background programs (but not all) load at startup and you could start by eliminating the unnecessary programs from running at startup by systematically unchecking the unnecessary programs on the msoconfig startup tab as described at the following site:

Many viruses/spwware/malware, will simply recheck the startup boxes, so this may not solve the problem, in which case you might want to consider reading the message in red at the top of the HijackThis forum - http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board?board.id=si_hijack and posting a message over there.

Thanks Steve

Problem is solved.  Turned out to be some sort of conflict with PCMService.exe.  I removed it (un-ticked the box) from Startup and all seems well.  I wonder has this been encountered by anyone else.

Unchecking PCMService has just saved me from going insane. I have an external numeric pad (wireless) and it was impossible to use in Excel throwing up incorrect characters and placing them in the wrong cell but since fixing the problem it is a dream to use. Thanks Bulletin Board.
