display settings

hello everyone once again,
i've been having a tough couple of week with my computer

but here is my current problem.
i recently had to format my computer and reinstall windows xp,  well when i did i had to go in to dell.com and install my drivers again for my modem and sound chips and so on.  well i dont seem to know how to install the vidio controller.  right now the setting is on default monitor 16 bit 640 x 480 pixels.  i cant seem to change it to 32 bit or a higher pixel which i need to run most of my programs.  does anyone have an idea where i can go to fix this???
i down loaded a driver for my monitor which is a 17in(16.OIN VIS)E773c monitor.  from the dell web.  but this did not do anything.  does some one have any ideas whats up?

thanks for any help,
laura c

It sounds as if you need to install your video card drivers from the cd that was sent to you with your computer.

I'm not sure I can help but do you know what kind of video card you have? or what kind of computer you have so people can check the specs?

It seems like you could go to the website of the card manufacturer and download the drivers but unless you know which card it is I'm not sure what to tell you.

Go to your properties and see what kind of card you have. If it is an nvidia (geforce and others) card go to nvidia.com or if it is an ati (radeon and other) card just do a search for the ati site and download the drivers. That may solve the problem.

Those are just two of the video card brands I know of. You may have intel graphics controller or something different, just search for it. My pc came with system restore on the pc so I didn't have a disc with the drivers on it. It was part of the restore software.

Anyway, downloading the drivers won't hurt as they may be newer or better than the ones that came with your pc.

Edit: Sorry I forgot that without the proper drivers it may not show the card you have, just look in your documentation or look at the specs for the pc you purchased.

If you tell us which model computer you have, someone can point you to the correct drivers.  Otherwise we will have to make a wild guess.

That is probably the brand but we still don't know what model I dont think. I'm not sure if they are like nvidia where one driver works for nearly the whole family.

But yeah, like stated above, if you post the model of your pc when can look into the specs further.
