It sounds like for whatever reason Firefox is set as your default browser.

In IE, try Tools -> Internet Options -> Programs -> Reset Web Settings to reset IE as the default.

And/or, you may need to fix your file associatons:

My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types -> go down through the list, and any files set to open with Firefox (primarily HTM and HTML), change to open with Internet Explorer.

You don't need it but it is so much better, why not take the plunge

I agree. It's best featurs are it's add on's:
Here's some of the main ones I swear by:

Flashblock - Blocks Flash media, most adds are flash based
Stop Autoplay - Blocks embedded media such as music etc.
GSpace - Lets you turn your Gmail account into an online data backup service, why not use the free 6 Gb?
Piclens - A cool image search tool in 3D.
NoScript - Makes Firefox a very safe browser, blocks scripts like Java unless you want to allow it from a trusted site
Download Status Bar - Puts all your downloads into a bar at the bottom of the screen - no more annoying windows such as those with IE.
I could go on but I'll leave it at that.
