downgrading a Dimension 2400 to Windows 2000

Hi all,

I don't want WXP and all the spyware that MS has put there to tell me what to
and not to do. I bought a Windows 2000 install that I want to put on the
machine instead. However, there are obviously drivers that I need to get to
get all of the hardware working properly. Is there a place where I can get
these drivers for W2K on the Dim. 2400?

Thanks,
DLC

There is no "spyware" in windows XP, unless you consider activation spyware, which it is not by any common definition.  Product activiation sole purpose is to enforce the liminations that have always been their, not to create new liminations

" There is no "spyware" in windows XP, unless you consider activation spyware, which it is not by any common definition. Product activiation sole purpose is to enforce the liminations that have always been their, not to create new liminations."

I realize that this is probably a religious argument, "you trust/distrust"...
However, I would not let my government put spyware on my computer to report on
my actions, why on earth would I let Microsoft? I license all my software, I'm
a programmer, I don't want to hear the "if you aren't doing anything wrong you
have nothing to worry about" argument either, if you don't recognize that as a
slippery-slope, then nothing I can say will change your mind either. I DON'T
trust Microsoft, as I don't trust my own government with my private information.

"Hi, we're with Microsoft, we're here to help..." (you can guess the original
quote.) ;)

YMMV, regards,

Thanks Jim,

Just about everything got fixed right up, but, I lost the "soft" powerdown
operation with I installed W2K, and nothing got it going. Is there something
that I have to enable to get that power button control back? Also, after all
the drivers were downloaded, I looked at the hardware manager and the USB
interface still had a ? next to it in the "other hardware" catagory. I see
no USB system drivers to download, is there a driver in the W2K OS that can
be selected that is better than the "questionable" default?

thanks again all,

Regarding Win2K USB drivers, both my Latitude C640 laptop and Precision Workstation 650 desktop have USB drivers signed by Intel, presumably because the USB chipsets are Intel's. If you can identify the chipset manufacturer, try USB-Drivers.com. They seem to have a pretty complete collection.

I'm not sure where the "soft power-down" feature comes from. I thought it was part of the ACPI support. I don't see anything separate for it in the Device Manager. Does "Power Buttons" appear under the "Advanced" tab in Control Panel/Power Options? What power scheme is selected in the leftmost tab?

One more possibility - what Service Pack's installed? I think there were some fixes to power management in SP2. All our Win2K machines are currently at SP3.

DLCSHANNON, I think you missed to point.  Consider, activation is required, but an internet connection is not.  You can activate by telephone.  Since you should activate immediately upon installation no personal information is yet on the PC, giving the required code string can therefore not give them any personal information.  If you buy a PC with from a large OEM then you never have to contact Microsoft to activate.  In either case if you never put your PC on the internet nothing can or will go to Microsoft.  However if you put a PC with any operating system on the internet it is always possible that your security will be comprised.  Therefore the fear should be of the internet, not Microsoft.  Registration, which includes some personal information in never required.
