Downloading problems
I am not sure if it's an XP issue, Hardware issue, or other software issue, or even an ISP issue, but here goes:
I have Windows XP, of course. When I go to download files, it will download some, then stop. No more network (dial-up) activity. Sometimes, it will start again, only to stop.
If I open another webpage, which causes network activity, the download will resume for a bit. Then stop dead. I've tried disabling the Firewall, no change.
I have Avast Anti-Virus, spyware blaster, Microsoft anti-spyware, adaware, spyware blaster, Win Patrol, and A2 trojan scanner. All tests came back negative.
I use Earthlink for my IP. My solution for now is using a program called "download express", it will complete the downloads, even if they stop, they will automatically resume after 30 seconds (more or less)
Now, reinstalling Earthlink would be a hassle, because I would have to uninstall, install the CD version, then the updates. That would be my last resort, short of reinstalling Windows.
I cannot install the latest updates for Earthlink, because of MSIinstaller warnings in event viewer, so I have to use the 2nd newest version.
If I need to, I could install the free version of Netzero, to see if it is an ISP issue or not.
I've tried reinstalling the Modem Driver, and using IPConfg /flushdns and /renew
It may help temporarily. I just don't understand these interruptions in my downloads, which occurs in IE and Firefox.
Download express is helping me now. But if it wasn't for that, I couldn't download very much.

Why don't you just connect normally using a LAN connection and without using EarthLink software? That's what I do for my Verizon broadband connection. You don't need to install all that spyware and other nonsense that ISPs give you. You just need the user name and password of your account.
Verizon tried to give me a CD full of useless bloatware and tripe but I never installed it. I'm not 100% sure if EarthLink requires you to have their software to log on to your account, but I highly doubt that. I just entered my account info in my modem/router and completely bypassed the Verizon software. I figure why make things more complicated right? You can even create a network connection in XP for a broadband account and connect to your ISP through PPPoE. But in my case, a LAN connection was much faster...
IMHO the EarthLink software is doing something funky to your connection. I would get rid of it. Just create a restore point before deleting your EarthLink software. If it doesn't work, just restore back to when you had the software. Good luck...

Not only that, it has a great built-in spamblocker. No spam ever gets through. (except every once in awhile, if I don't have it configured right)
Problem fixed for now: after trying everything, I used a Ghost image to restore my computer to February. I had to reinstall all Windows updates since then, and install all of the newer versions of anti-spyware programs. And all of the programs that wasn't installed on that image.
All of my pictures, documents, and music were on another HD, so it did not affect that.
Thanks for responding. I am considering dumping Earthlink after the year is up (August)then the monthly cost goes up. I just pay $10.97 a month right now. They gave me a whole year at that rate.

I still prefer to avoid the software extras and such from ISPs. I would recommend to anyone to get rid of that unnecessary baggage. You can get more effective software to block spyware and spam for free and that is not so invasive. Well anyways, I'm just glad that you got everything working okay now.

And the latter is over my budget.
