Downloading Word Document (.doc)

First time user, but my system doesn't seem to be able to open attachments sent to me by e-mail, i.e. word doc files (Microsoft Office), message reads:  Adobe reader cannot open file because it either isn't a supported file or file has been damaged.  Can anyone help please?

Usually Dell put a trial version of MSOFFICe with sometimes ask for a CD to complete the instalation. On your post it says adobe is not the one to open those files.
Get MS Office and install it, If is installed set to open by default to open .doc files.

It is not clear whether you have Microsoft Word installed, which is the normal program used to open .doc files.

Assuming that you have Microsoft Word installed:
You need to set your file association for .doc so that Microsoft Word opens, and not Adobe Reader. Click Start > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program. Scroll down to .doc and then click Change Program.

No Windows operating system (ever) has native ability to open .doc files. You need to install Microsoft Office (includes Word, Excel and other programs, depending on version), or standalone Microsoft Word.

Hi SuziMur
There is a wdviewer.exe it is by Microsoft office word viewer 2003 self-extracting
IF you do a search on the internet you can find it it will only let you view word doc
it will not let you write with it but you can read the doc,s.
Good Luck !

WorPad is not even an option, it will not display the document as it has to be, only if they are .rtf or .txt

To modify my last post: I forgot about WordPad in Windows before XP, which could open and save in .doc format.
