Driver Install
I have a Dell Deminsion 3000 and have reloaded XP. In what order are drivers installed? I have downloaded all the drivers I need, just need to get them installed. Thanks for your help. Jim

Z06berlin,
You said...
I never heard of Driverobot until you mentioned it, today. I thought this was a third party software. Just use the drivers links that theflash1932 provided and install them in that order.

Agreed. Do yourself a favor and download and install the following, in the order listed (you will need to download and save these to removable media you can move them to the 3000 with):
System Software:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&releaseid=R121089&SystemID=DIM_CEL_3000&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=6317&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=5&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=0&libid=7&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=161321
Chipset:

After installing these devices, then let's work with what is left. You will probably be left with your video device and a modem. We'll need to know which you have to get you the right drivers for them ... go to Device Manager (right-click My Computer, Manage), right-click on the device in question, Properties, Details tab, change dropdown to Hardware Ids and give us the VEN and DEV ID's.

Z06berlin,
Try reading...

Z06berlin,
I wish you luck if you're using a third party software and drivers to install.
The Desktop/Notebook Utility needs to be installed first(if applicable), then the chipset drivers. If they are NOT installed first, then the rest of the drivers will fail to install.
How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order
Since the operating system was re-installed did you remember to go to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag(DO NOT POST SERVICE TAG here or your post will get deleted, since it contains your personal information), and install these drivers in this order.
:emotion-55: Hint :emotion-55: When downloading the drivers, make a folder for each drivers and name it with the device it belongs with to make it easier to install them in the proper order.
Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software(if applicable)
Chipset or SMBus driver
Processor Driver (if applicable)
Video
Audio (sound)
Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
Modem
Network Card
QuickSet(Laptop only)

When I try to download it wants/acts like it wants to install directly on my computer (HP). How do I download and save so I can install on the Dell? The Dell doesn't have internet capability yet as I have no drivers installed. Thanks. Jim

Rick,
I am not using third party all of the drivers I listed were from Dell Download site. I am currently waiting on the arrival of more memory so that I can finish setting up this computer. I really appreciate your assistance and if I have more questions, I will getting back but will also let you know how everything works. Thanks again. Jim

There's no need to wait to "set up" your PC ... the memory can be added later without so much as a hiccup from Windows.

I tried already and got a blue screen screen, so decided to wait until I get the memory.

I tried that already and I got the bluescreen of death. So decided to wait, as the computer only has 512kb memory. Is there a way to turn off OS Install mode? As it is set, I get available memory 256kb. I can't find it in the BIOS and have tried MSConfig and everything there is okay and even under advance there is no check mark to say how much memory to use. Jim

There should be an option to turn off OS Install Mode ... IF your system supports it at all. No system will turn it on automatically, not all systems have the option, and if it can be turned on manually it can obviously be turned off the same way. If your system is only seeing 256MB of RAM and it doesn't have the OS Install Mode option in the BIOS, then one of your memory modules (or memory slot on the motherboard) could be bad. I would try each stick in the first slot to see if you have better luck with one or the other (I.e. one is bad). You could also download and run diagnostics on the memory to confirm. XP only requires 64MB ... 256MB is more than enough to install/run XP in a minimal configuration.
What BSOD are you getting, and when (if you are in Windows already)?

Z06berlin,
Hopefully the BSOD isn't something like a hardware issue. Try running the Dell Diagnostics. Run the full diagnostics.

I am waiting on new memory, so hopefully this solves the issue of OS Install mode is On. I got the blue screen while I was trying to load drivers the first time (before I asked the order of install), I figured that I got them out of sequence the system responded.

I found it buried in the BIOS. I have just completed loading all updates. I want to thank everyone for their help. Jim
