Follow this link and download the chipset driver for your system to the desktop. Reboot in Safe Mode (F8 before XP starts to load). Double-click on chipset file on desktop to install it. Reboot normally.

Click start>help&support
Click "Undo changes..."
Follow prompts and pick latest available date when you know it was ok. If that fixes it, make sure firewall and antiviral software are runnning and go directly to MS update site and allow it to scan your system for needed updates.
