Silver Pioneer,

Do you mean explorer.exe shuts down or computer shuts down?  If Computer shuts down then we need to stop the automatic restart, so we can find out what error Dr Watson is trapping.

By default, XP automatically restarts on a System Failure error.  To turn this feature off:

Click on Control Panel/System/Advanced/Settings (Startup & Recovery)/System Failure/Uncheck-Automatically Restart.   Apply change.

Now, go to Control Panel|Display.  See if you get display properties or an error there.  If not, go to Desktop.  Right-click and see if you get an error there.  Let us know any specific errors reported.

Additional info on errors can be obtained in Event Viewer.  See this link for explanation:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q308427

Silver_Pioneer,
Open the drwtsn32.log file.  Click on Start|Run.  Type drwtsn32. Browse for the location of the log file.  Open it.  Look at the beginning of the log file for the faulting application.  Also look at the list of other programs running when the error occurred.  May give us some clue as to what is causing your problem.

Silver_Pioneer,

Unable to located definitive cause for problem.  Next best thing.  Click on Start|Run. Type sfc /scannow.  Press Enter.  This will verify all XP system files are correct version.  Also, you did not say if clicking on Display in Control Panel caused same error.  If not, go to Control Panel.  Click on Display.  Click on Desktop tab.  Click on Customize button.  On General tab, uncheck Internet Explorer.  Now, Click on Web tab. Uncheck anything currently checked. Apply changes.  Close Display Properties.

Right click on Start. Left click on Search.  Type desk.cpl in "All or part of file name:" box.  Select C:\ in "Look in" box. Click Search.   Note if desk.cpl version in C:\Windows\System32 folder is same as version in C:\Windows\System32\dllcache folder.  You can double-click on either one to test if they both are functioning correctly.
