DSL, Win Me and Install issues
My plan is/was to install DSL, coming from dial up service and set up a small home network between Windows 98SE os and Windows ME.
I installed ethernet card, and drivers..device manager acknowledging the install.
Ran the Bell South software for the DSL modem install, and was up until 3:00am with four calls to bells tech support.
Before installing ethernet card, I uninstalled the dial up modem and removed the hardware from the system and then installed the ethernet card.
Bell South tech had me run ipcnfg and also ping ip address through msdos..both seemed to work properly.
Issues came in trying to access the ip through IE explorer and consistenly encountered IE "page can not be displayed error Detect network settings etc"
Ultimately because IE could not be used to access the IP address I was advised I had ME/IE issues..
I then pulled the ethernet card, reinstalled my dial up modem and used system restore to regress the system prior to any of the DSL/ethernet attemps...Here I am.

I also tried doing the DSL install on the Windows 98SE system and followed the same steps. On the 98SE system, the install appeared to go more smoothly meaning I made it past step 3 with the Bell South disk, which in ME could not (as the Bell software kept telling me it to double check my ethernet hook up as it could not detect it, yet in MS dos I could ping)
In Windows 98 IE kept crashing with a Ws_2***.dll error.
In following the same process I reinstalled the dial up modem on WIndow 98SE, I attempted to connect to the internet if I am
on line IE in the 98 system crashes, and if I am
off line it comes up fine.
All this said, any ideas thoughts etc? Let me add on both systems the dial up isp service remained configured as the default service...any chance this may be a part of the errors? Since this is my first exposure to DSL install...I am clueless ...
PS by the way..the DSL is an Ethernet (not usb) connection.
