Do you need a special modem to hook up to DSL or will my cable modem work?

Yup. But several points.

1) If you're going from dialup to DSL, it's a nice bump in speed. However, if you have cable, it's MUCH SLOWER.

2) Verizon DSL's prices will be matched by your cable provider, if you ask. I called Comcast, asked for the Retention Department. Told them Verizon was continually offering me $29.95 per month. I got that rate for year from Comcast. Verizon now offers a lower price, but it's for a much slower speed.

3) The further you are from the phone switching office, the SLOWER it will be. If they advertise 768, you won't get that.

4) Make sure you can cancel the service. They offer a 1 year contract. If it doesn't have a cancel within x days if you don't like it, dont' get it.

Not necessarily true.  I have version DSL in PA.  My speed choices are 768Kbps, 3 Mbps and now 15Mbps and 30 Mbps are also available.  Price is a function of speed.  I am still using 3 Mbps service.  When I test my speed it is 3 Mbits.  My friend has Comcast which claims 6 Mbits his tested speed us actually 4 Mbits.  Comcast and I guess most/all cable companies use a shared loop therefore the more people in the loop the slower each one is.  With DSL each user has a direct path to the central office, therefore ones usage does no affect another.

What are you paying for the 3mbps service?

$29.95 on a one year contract.  I have had various version of Verizon DSL 640Kbps, 786 kbps, 1.5 mbps and now 3 mbps since 1999.  Next step , =I hope, will be 30 mbps but need some cable pulled  first.
