dual monitors both the same
I have a inspiton 530 with XP provessional o..s. I installed dual monitors so i could run a software that requires dual monitors. I am using a USB connected vga dual monitor adaptor. All worked well for a while, but for some reason now both monitors display identical information. Using windows control panel/display properties/settings, monitor two is indicating "inactive". I used tp be able to switch it from one monitor to dual monitor operation froma tool bar on the software which needs two monitors, but it will no longer switch form single to dual monitor operation,
Using device manager to test the usb connected monitor the test indicates that the divice is working correctly.
Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated.

Try reinstalling the driver from here. It might be more up-to-date.
Have you also tried XP system restore (instructions here) to a time when it worked?

I would personally recommend installing a graphics card opposed to trying to use a USB connected vga dual monitor adaptor. I think you will have less issues.
Is your Inspiron 530 the slim version or not?

I guess i don't see the relavance of your opening comment.
No, my 530 is not the slim version.
The question was and remains "what can I try to do that might reactivate the dual monitor setup so that the screens can display different information.

Installing a graphics card with 2 outputs will enable you to have 2 monitor outputs. It will probably be a lot more stable. The slim unit can't accommodate as many graphics card as the regular version can. Plus you should be able to find a graphics card for fairly cheap.
The software you are using to manage your multiple monitors is and what is the exact device, manufacturer/model of the USB to VGA adaptor?

I guess I was dreading downloading the driver from the web site(based on a bad experience a couple years ago).
Anyway, all is working as intended now and I thank you for your help!

Thanks for the explanation, and if I can't get the usb to vga converter to work that will be my next move.
I am using ECLIPSE SEE UV150 converter. The driver was installed from the cd that came with the hardware.
