E510 unable to install - missing mysterious driver?

I'm trying to install Vista B2 on E510, clean install, booting from DVD...on its own HDD.

I was temped to install Vista as upgrade to WIndows XP MCE....but being a cowboy...I've lost many hours to that kind of craziness. Nope! Vista will live on its very own hard drive.

Machine will sometimes hang after wallpaper and mouse pointer appear - other times, I will get prompt for a driver. In typical MS fashion...gives me no indication of WHAT driver is needed. Just tells my to insert driver disk, thumb drive, my tube steak...or whatever media the mysterious driver is on.

Now...being a techno-geek...I've made some changes to my machine...I have a Hauppauge MCE-150 tuner card...a couple of USB hubs..and a PCI USB card. Also...2GB of RAM.

To be sure it was not my add-ons screwing up Vista...I removed everything I added, with exception of my Microsoft Media Pro keyboard, and Logitech MX-1000 laser mouse.

You know what...still no luck. Keeps asking for this driver. I am starting to think Vista has a problem with Intel 945 chipset...or ATI X600 card.

Anybody out in Dell user land come across this problem. Maybe something in BIOS with RAID or ACPI??

Thanks in advance....Stenosis

How do I run windows update when I cannot install?

I ran the Vista upgrade advisor, and it told me everything was "Ready for Vista" except my Canon scanner and Pixma printer...of which both I disconnected.

I did download the ATI Vista beta drivers and put on my thumbdrive...but Vista was not convinced the mysterious driver was on my thumb drive.

Thanks for the help anyway...

If you hav'nt already found the driver try windows update and if you think it could be a video driver ,ati has a good broad spectrum windows vista x86 & x64. My e1505 installed with ultimate settings..The system score was a 3..

alright...just blew another two hours trying to install. Actually made it to Expanding files...then install could not continue.

For what reason....God knows.

Thank for yor replying. Mine is a D 820, which is EMT64..a la...can execute 64 bit code.

Since my problems are so random, I'm starting to suspect my Vista DVD has a problem. I'm going to re-download and re-burn a new DVD.

Be back in a few days.

Thanks again,
Sten

Beta testing is being distributed at a wider range than in past versions, in my opinion they need to get as much help on the subject as possible.. Microsoft installs time bombs in the operating system To end the test at designated dates to make you want to puchase it after it shuts down.. Or To evaluate anouther build.. The buid that I received was ultimate.. That should be the build 5384.

If I had read correctly this time at intel's web sight the d 830,840 series processors are emt64 capable witch means you might have to install x64.. Or the x86 doesnt know how to install. I had gotten an error similar to yours when I had tried installing x64 on a x86 (32 bit)system.. I just wanted to see if they had included the support. I guess you need to Make sure the chip isnt 64 bit capable because x86 will not install or i guess will not have support.
