E521 Vista Question

Anyone who has an E521 with Vista pre-installed, what version do you have? I have 1.0.3 and will be upgrading to Vista shortly (I hope). My question regards my using a Sandisk micro 2GB flashdrive to utilize the Speedboost capability feature in Vista. I am aware the the bootup problems that version 1.1.4 were supposed to correct. Does Speedboost really have any real effect with performance? Thank you for any replies.

If you are referring to the BIOS version, my E521 with pre-installed Vista is 1.1.4.  I got a 2G Sandisk Microcruzer to play around with as it was marked down to under $25.  I allocated about 1.8G to "ReadyBoost," the remainder being the U3 software.  With 2G of installed RAM, I can't say that I saw any effect of the USB device.  I have since erased the U3 software as it isn't recognized by Vista, and now use the Microcruzer for mundane general file storage and transfer.  As I have other, slower non-"ReadyBoost" USB memory sticks which work as well for these purposes, I should have saved my money.  If, however, anybody can prove any "ReadyBoost" benefits to me, I'll stick it back in.  Bill

Speedboost only has any impact with about 512MB of RAM, like eickmewg said, with 2GB, you'll never notice it.

Wow! You have an E521 with Vista installed on it? The last 8 phone calls I had with the upgrade fullfillment people I was told that my upgrade wasn't shipped yet because it wasn't possible to run Vista on an E521. Gee, I can hardly believe Dell lied to me again. Shocking.

andreychuk: Vista DOES RUN on the E521

You must be mistaken, because if it did I'm sure I wouldn't have had multiple emails and phone calls with Dell telling me that's why I have to wait more than 6 months for the upgrade I paid for. To say that it does run on an E521 would be the same thing as saying that Dell has been lying to me about the whole upgrade thing - they would stoop to that low a level would they?

If I was mistaken, why would I be running it on there at this time now?

Stikboy failed to read the first line of the first post "an E521 with Vista pre-installed".

His issue is with an upgrade, they havn't started shipping the E521 upgrades yet.

No stikboy didn't fail to read the first line of the first post, Stikboy was wonderring in a sarcastic tone why all his calls to Apu at the Dell Vista-scam Upgrade site are answered with a lot of untruths about Vista not working on E521 machines. If it doesn't work, then how are they selling E521 machines with it preloaded? Obviously they either actually have the ability to make it work and are lying to thousands of customers, or the customers with E521 with Vista pre-installed are dellusional and don't realize they are running XP. My guess is that Dell instead sold me a machine by offerring Vista as an incentive, but has now renegged - which means some form of action is going to have to be taken by the people who were scammed. Unfortunately Dell is so aware of their guilt that they feel the need to censor any words that might point to the nature of these actions - but I'm sure you know what I am referring to.

Ok, so per http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2007/04/06/10760.aspx it's going to take them a while to slipstream the new Mediashield driver into the upgrade packages. I suppose the turnaround time for this was much less at the factory. We can always choose not to believe that, in which case there's not a whole lot anyone can do.
