A portable hard drive would be great and then you could continue backing up to these since it sounds like you don't have backups now.

I used my Ipod to transfer my files and it worked very well. If you want I will post the procedure here.

 

You could also use it to hold a backup file for safety if you have enough free space.

I have saved the files for transfer (to the laptop) on CD's with easy transfer.  I just need to know if I should create a back up of current laptop conditions before attempting to transfer files onto it?  If so what should I do?

If it were me, I would bypass these gimmick applications and just copy the data to a Cd and  then just copy ti back.
