email, folders and desktop back-up HOW???

I hope I'm in correct place.  Trying to do back up of system to take computer to shop for clean-up.  I'm a very beginner and gone to first time users but no result on the below mentioned.

I have a dell 8200 and don't know how to back-up e-mail folders, desktop or folders.  I have run a search for desktop and folders,  saved the search but how do I get them to my documents?? Or is this WRONG?

I have figured out my documents and how to get favorites into documents but  I'm totally lost on  email, desktop and folders.  Can  Anyone Click by Click help??

A lot of programs have a built in "back up" feature.  If you're worried about Documents, most of those are stored in the My Documents Folder.  You could get a company to walk you thru step my step on backing up, but they usually cost a lot of $$. If you call Dell Tech Support, they can transfer you to a fee based backup queue.

So in other words it's not one of those easy step by step to do desktop at least?  I figured out the rest.  But the desktop back-up.

loner03,

You wrote, "I have figured out my documents and how to get favorites into documents but I'm totally lost on email, desktop and folders. Can Anyone Click by Click help??"

For your email, if you are using Outlook Express locate the folder that holds your email messages (you can locate it by searching for *.dbx, but it is located at C:\Documents and Settings\ Your Account\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{...lot of alphanumerics...}\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Copy that entire folder to removable media (CD). If you are not familiar with how to do this in Windows XP take a look at this. Copy your Windows Address Book (*.wab) to removable media (a floppy disk should hold it, but you can add it to the items to write to CD if you wish). It is located at C:\Documents and Settings\ Your Account\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book.

You can copy your desktop if you wish but if the repair shop makes any major changes to your system the shortcuts there may no longer work. It is quite easy to reconstruct a desktop if that is the case. If you want to save it, though, it is at C:\Documents and Settings\ Your Account\Desktop. You can add it to the CD.

I don't know what folders you are interested in backing up, but in general you need to back up the email items described above, IE Favorites and any other data that has been created by specific applications.
