endless boot loop

My computer keeps looping at the DELL splash screen during boot. Worked about 6 months ago then I moved away, got a nice laptop that met an unfortunate and untimely end.. so i had the older cpu mailed to me, since then it's been doing the loop.

It's an ancient cpu...

OptiPlex GX 1 ( yes... 1 )

80gb hard drive

500mhz Pentium 3

512mb RAM

ATI Radeon 9200 (removed now)

XP sp2

That's about all the specs I can remember about it, been so long.

I've searched the forums for similar problems but most refer to using the ctrl+F11 function, which doesn't work, or using the XP disk/Recovery disks which I no longer have. F8 works though and brings up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" for safe mode, boot logging, debugging, etc.., but nothing changes the loop. When selecting safe mode the last thing to display before it reboots is the 'Mup.sys' file if that helps with anything.

I do have access to a working computer I can plug the hard drive in to so I can get into the files if there's something there that can help without messing up the working computer.

Please help, any advice or ideas to try would be great with the exception of "get a new computer", believe me, I would if I could afford it.:smileysad:

Go to this address to request a set of backup discs from Dell:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/en/backupcd_form?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&redirect=1

You can then reinstall the OS from scratch and see if that takes care of the problem.
