Erratic CPU Usage

Hi All,

My computer (Dell E520 - 1.5GB) has suddenly decided to stick every few minutes.  At present I have the Internet open, a radio station, and windows task manager (to watch what's happening).

The CPU Usage is jumping around from a steady 2% to 11% to 13% to 4%..blah...blah...blah.....eventually ending up at 100% when the computer sticks.  It's also preventing me from typing properly as it misses out letters when typing them, making me have to go back and enter it again - completely frustrating.

Any ideas why this would be happening, and what needs to be done ?

Any help would be appreciated before I drop the computer out of my bedroom window.

Thanks.

Have you tried running an anti-virus or anti-spyware lately?

Yeah, I done a manual run on McAfee before I done anything tonight as it's been happening since Friday.  But no use unfortunately. :smileysad:

How about scanning it for spyware as well?

Try Ctrl + Alt + Del and open task manager, select the Processes Tab and then monitor the processes to see what process it spiking the CPU then that will give you a starting point to get rid of the hungry process / program.

I did try this last night, and it was iexplore.exe that seemed to be generating the highest numbers when it sticks.

How will I be able to get rid off this if it's a virus ?

Also, read the information that is provided in the link that I am providing you to run Internet Explorer diagnostics.
Run the "Click to run a free scan" for iexplorer.exe Related errors" in this link: http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/iexplore/
Plus, run the "Check that iexplore.exe is stable on your computer" and "Run a free performance scan." If it finds anything wrong, it should correct it or you should run "Fix iexplore. exe Errors: Free scan."  Plus, this site is Microsoft Certified. Hopefully the information there will help you. Either way, post back.

Have you changed Internet Explorer in any way lately? Such as updating it?

That's strange, because iexplore.exe is Internet Explorer.

Thanks for that - I'll give it a go when I get home tonight.  As per your previous message, I haven't done any updating to Internet for months, so I'm really puzzled as to what the problem can be.

A bloke in our I.T. department recommended www.avast.com to use as my protection rather than McAfee ?  What do you think ?  Have you heard of avast ?

Ah yes, i've heard of Avast. I personally use AVG Anti Virus instead, but on the Virus/Spyware forum, it is recommended quite a lot. I'd use anything over McAfee. Seems to be worse than a virus. In my opinion, Avast is a good choice. :smileyhappy: Let's hope the link will help fix your problem.

I just tried installing the Avast program as suggested by my mate, but I couldn't access the Internet afterwards ! :smileysad:

I done a scan with the Avast program and it came up that there were no programs on my computer which had any problems ?

Should I try the links you put on here, or does that seem pointless now - considering I've just done a scan with another virus thing.

I'm just watching the Windows Task Manager, and it's looking quite steady at the moment.

What do you suggest ?  Come to think of it, my typing is actually working as well.....very odd :smileyindifferent:

I'm just runnng the Cick to Run a Free Scan part of your link, and it's come up with 88 problems/errors found so far (it's only been running for about a minute :smileysurprised:

Update : it found 223 problems/errors !!!! :smileysurprised:    It only said that it could repair 15 though, as I've got to purchase online to remove all 223.

For the record - my keyboard does still miss letters when typing (I think I must have had a lucky break at that last message).

Did you uninstall McAfee before uninstalling Avast? Because that could cause problems if you did. Never run 2 anti-viruses. Any luck with the scan and fixing the problem?

Nah - the bloke in work (I.T man) said it shouldn't cause any probs, so I left both open.

The scan link that you sent me was only able to remove 15 off the errors that it had found - you have to purchase the software (or whatever it is) to be able to remove the rest of the 223 that it found.

I'm starting to think that I might just need to do a complete re-installation of XP, and all the rest of the stuff.

What do you think ?

Oh, I didn't know about the hidden fee. :smileysurprised: I'm not sure a re-installation of Windows XP will fix the problem, but it might. Seems that Internet Explorer is causing the biggest problem.
