Erratic CPU Usage

Hi All,

My computer (Dell E520 - 1.5GB) has suddenly decided to stick every few minutes.  At present I have the Internet open, a radio station, and windows task manager (to watch what's happening).

The CPU Usage is jumping around from a steady 2% to 11% to 13% to 4%..blah...blah...blah.....eventually ending up at 100% when the computer sticks.  It's also preventing me from typing properly as it misses out letters when typing them, making me have to go back and enter it again - completely frustrating.

Any ideas why this would be happening, and what needs to be done ?

Any help would be appreciated before I drop the computer out of my bedroom window.

Thanks.

I was under the impression that if I done a complete re-installation of the OS that it would resolve the problem, but obviously I'm wrong.

Do you know of anything else I could do to sort this out, apart from dropping from a window ? :smileywink:

Let's hope we don't have to drop the computer out the window. :smileysurprised: How about trying what they did on this link: http://forums.cnet.com/5208-10149_102-0.html?forumID=7&threadID=253195&messageID=2519357 Maybe we'll get lucky. Try the second suggestion/post, since we already tried the first one.

Also, you can try disabling anything that isn't needed for startup. Go to Run. Type in msconfig. Then check the option "Selective Startup" and "Load system services." Reboot the computer. Hopefully that will clear up the computer "sticking" and make your computer run faster. Also, run Windows Update. It can be found in the Control Panel. Once it updates, reboot the computer.

Thanks for your help again S.C - I'll try both the suggestions you've given me tomorrow night (as I'm out tonight).

I done a complete disc backup of all my files last night in case I need to do a re-install of XP the weekend.   Plus, I done a "clean-up" (some wizard thing that's on the computer) of all the files I have on the system which included alot of the stuff I might have on the Internet which I don't use.

So hopefully with that, and your "Selective Startup" suggestion I should be up and running alot better for the weekend - finger's crossed :smileyhappy:

Thanks again buddy :smileywink:

Let's hope so. You're very welcome. Also try the other link I provided and Windows Update. Hopefully one of those will fix your problem. Come to think of it, it could be a virus attacking Internet Explorer. I recommend you creating a HijackThis log. Follow the instructions from this link: http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=si_hijack&message.id=52014 The experts on the HijackThis forum will analyze your log and if they find anything wrong, they will give you instructions on how to fix it.

If you still have the problem, and have tried all my other options but with no success, you can try a PC restore by follow this link: http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/

Good luck. I hope it works.

Hi S.C

I've gone and done a complete XP re-installation (after backing up my old files), and touch wood everything seems to be working perfectly.

I'm able to type this out without any stoopid re-typing issues, or missing letters, and no sticky-ness.

So fingers crossed the problem is gone ! :smileyvery-happy:

Thanks again for all your help - you're a genuine diamond :smileywink:

Thanks. :smileyvery-happy: I'm glad I could be of help. By the way, if the problem does come back in the future, try the PC restore link I had provided in one of my other posts.
