I solved this problem last night by creating a new user profile.  I read somewhere in researching this problem that my user profile might be corrupt.  I can now update all of my applications.  You can find instructions for fixing a corrupt user profile at  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profile   I hope this solves your problem too.
