Error-checking, ...serious error after restart?

Each time I run the Error-checking utility in Windows XP Home Edition,
after Windows states the scan is complete, on the restart I get the
error message stating "The system has recovered from a serious error."
In the "Check disk options" I select both options for the scan. How do
I fix this problem? I just got the computer in April.

Thanks,
Lee.

When running a quick error check, you should not check either option. Those options require a reboot and run before Windows starts. Just run it without the options and it will let you know if there are errors that need to be fixed. Here's another method--Go to the Start button, select Run, type CHKDSK   /F and say yes to a restart. Allow the scan to run and fix any errors. Make sure you have not disabled any essential Windows startup items in msconfig. If you are using Selective Startup, use Normal startup instead and see if the error message goes away.
