I am getting the same error message.  I have been trying for days to find a solution.  This problem came from nowhere.  Cannot update my anti-virus software, can no longer use Adobe because it will not install.  Cannot update itunes.  My computer is now stuck in time.  Please help.

I solved this problem last night by creating a new user profile.  I read somewhere in researching this problem that my user profile might be corrupt.  I can now update all of my applications.  You can find instructions for fixing a corrupt user profile at  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profile   I hope this solves your problem too.

I ran regedit, and follwed this path: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" Then I modifyed the appdata's thing to read "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming"

That's the short answer. If you are a "newbie" you should first Search Microsoft to figure out how to Edit your Register. Pay attention to the Import and Export so you can restore your changes if there's a problem. There are complete directions on one of Microsoft's help for Windows XP, but I used it with Vista just fine.  Basically you use the Run command and type in regedit. The just keep clicking on the headings listed above in order. When you get to the "User Shell Folders" the rest of the folders will pop up on the right side of the screen. Go to the AppData folder and Modify it the way I did it in the above paragraph. Be careful to type it in exactly.

This worked for me when the Registry corrections folders all failed. This fix will work for all of the "User Shell Folders" that have become corrupt, but you would have to know the correct thing to type in.  Good Luck. P.S. disclaimer: I'm no expert, just smart and persistent.
