"Error Deleting File or Folder: Cannot delete SS_WAV: The directory is not empty"

I receive this error message when trying to delete Canon (digital camera) program files...
Trying to uninstall/delete and reinstall camera programs/software- my digital pics just stopped loading to computer one day, doesn't work anymore.

Followed instrux from Canon 'cust service' (yes, logged in as Syst Administrator) :
  1. Uninstalled all Canon programs found under 'All programs'.
  2. Could not complete next step: "delete following":  C:\Program Files\Canon (above error msg)

Canon's response:
Restart computer to release file from computers memory, and try to delete folder again.
If message persists, open Canon folder and try to delete each subfolder individually.

Again, I get same error msg...

Canon's last reply:  "...may be problems with system itself.. contact computer manufacturer and/or Microsoft for further assistance"

And unfortunately I just don't get most of this comp stuff in the first place... it is making me nuts.
Anyone have any advice on what I should try next?

Thank you!!!!   Laura

That error is typical of a program that has modules (programs) loaded in memory at startup.  When you uninstall the program, using the Control Panel/remove software you will get the message that the folder cannont be deleted because the directory is not empty.  In those cases, Canon is correct that you need to restart Windows and then manually delete the folder.  If it still won't let you delete it, manually delete any files/sub folders first then it should allow you to delete the main folder.

If you still cannont delete it, there was a problem with the uninstalll and in that case you will need to reinstall the program and then try the uninstall again.  However, since you wanted to uninstall then reinstall, try reinstalling the program and see if it's OK.  One issue, the Canon program very likely is not the source of your problem.  If the PC is not recognizing the camera then there could be a USB issue of some sort.

Thank you so much for such a quick response!

I did attempt to manually delete the sub files/folders, and received that same error message...

The comp was recognizing the camera- where it began to fail, was the 'Camera Window' function no longer transferring any of the selected images.  After clicking "download" and designating/naming file folder to place the images, program appeared to work properly, then simply stops/aborts at point just after the transfer begins, as status reads: "-0- of (#) images saved"  -leaving only the newly created folder (empty), in 'My Pictures'.    And from there....

Referring to troubleshooting guide (logged on Syst Admin), I attempted delete/reinstall:
* No Canon files were found to delete...
Folder [Scanners & Cameras] was empty.   Folder [Other Devices] was not found.
Folder [Inf] had no "oem" files found which read: " **Canon Camera** ".
* I uninstalled all Canon files found listed in "All Programs", and then attempted to reinstall...
Error:"An installable virtual device driver failed DII installation. Choose CLOSE to terminate."
* Installation does continue, but then stops at 'Camera Window' portion...   Error Msg:
 "Error writing to____, please verify access."   <{what I remember- can't find note on.this}
* Tried clicking RETRY a few times, but only working option was CANCEL.

Canon advises:  Please uninstall all Canon software and delete the following:
            1.  C:\Program Files\Canon
            2.  {I didn't get this far... see following/next}

Following the above instructions:
1. Uninstalled all Canon programs found under 'All programs'.
2. {Unable to complete next step, "delete the following":  1. C:\Program Files\Canon }....
Error msg: "Error Deleting File or Folder: Cannot delete SS_WAV: The directory is not empty"

Canon advises:  Restart comp to release file from memory, then try to delete folder again.
If message persists, open Canon folder and try to delete each subfolder individually.

 Following these last instructions:
I open Canon file { C:\Program Files\Canon }, attempt to delete each folder inside.  Again, same
error msg: "Error Deleting File or Folder: Cannot delete SS_WAV: The directory is not empty"

And this is where Canon directs me to Dell/Microsoft for further help...   [so, this blonde chick will just go back out and finish working on her truck this morning instead-  hmm, much easier to fix a parking brake than a comp program... haha   go figure.]

Thank you for your help!      Laura
