ERROR File "MDATA.DAT" not found

On startup, I am receiving the error message 'File MDATA.DAT not found'.  I don't have any other symptoms (that I've noticed).  This began after I tried to install an USB optical mouse on my Inspriron 8100, edited the registry, had only partial success, and  restored my system to a restore point.

I don't know what application uses mdata.dat or why I'm getting the message.  Does anyone know anything about this file?

I would think this file was/is associated with the USB mouse you tried to install. It apparently is still being called during the boot process. You could do a system file search for mdata.dat and delete the references that come up - after setting a restore point just in case. I did a Google search for mdata.dat and found this, too, which may help: http://www.winforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1308
