error in Windows system32\rundll32.exe

Question

Somehow my c:windows\system32\rundll32.exe     is coruupt. I get this error every time I try and load certain Windows files example Add/Remove, Paint, all programs  I cannot use run.   I have my orginal disk and also a SP2  and I would like to just repair this error problem without having to re-install all programs.   I inserted my Cd rom and the '4 different posiblities come up. There is a Green arrow  by # 1 Install Windows XP  but nothing happens when I click on it. I was trying to see if there was a sub menu to repair my Windows XP Home.   Any idea how I can fix my Windows problem as it preventing me from accesing most programs on my computer.

http://www.updatexp.com/support-files/scannow-sfc.pdf   You may find it easier to run the system file checker to check the integrity of your files. Check out the site above for the directions. You may need your XP Disc so have it handy.

I cannot access this scanner. When I type sfc .... or regedit in run I always get the box that opens and it says 'Open with' and there is a long list of programs but not what I need. Any other suggestions.

Go to Start>Run> and type in SFC /scannow. Then click on OK.  Let the program run. (There is a space after SFC and /scannow.)
