Error Message 1402

I have tried to install the Adboe Reader program for several months.  Each time it downloads perfectly, but when I try to install it get the following message:  HKey_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\classes\PDF.PdfCtrl\CLSID.  I have talked to Adboe, they say its not their problem, its a registry problem.  They suggested I contact Microsoft.  I did.  They responded saying that any software program with OEM in the product number it is the computer manufacturer's problem.  All I want to do is to be able to download PDF files and it's such a hassle.  I don't know where else to turn.  I am hoping someone out there can help me.  If it's a registry problem it should be a fairly simple fix.  The Adobe company had me open up the regedit file, but I could not do anything in the file, like makre changes.  Let me know if any of you can help.  Thanks.

What model PC?  What Operating system?  there are many Dell models and no one can give you specific assistance without this info.  all we can do is offer general suggestions.

I have a Dell Dimension 2350 and am running Microsoft XP.  I have high speed internet but this problem has been going on way before I got high speed.  Thanks for asking.  I should have been more specific.

Have you found any answers to your Adobe problem yet?  I have a different computer but the same problem.  I have been battling this for over a year, maybe two.

Greetings and welcome to the Dell Forums...

I know you were sent here form the Scratch Pad area, and you were certainly right to search before posting, but since this thread is several months old, I'm not sure the original poster will be able to answer your question.

However, see if this link helps. I think it should.

Let us know, so a future searcher will know if it works. Seems like a common problem.

And,as a last resort, you may want to consider an alternative PDF reader, such as Foxit Reader. It is free, and some people use it as a replacement even when the Adobe option is available. It is faster and smaller.... Read more about it here:

Good luck.

EDIT:
The Adobe link has many possible solutions. If one does not work, do not give up.

I cannot thank you enough!  The adobe site you sent me to had very specific instructions on editing the registry without peril to the health of my computer and I was able to follow and fix my problem!  I reinstalled the newest version of Adobe without a hitch and am up and running!  I spent so much time with Adobe and Dell on the phone trying to solve this probem and you are my savior!  Thanks again.

For the last 2 days I have been searching hi and low for a solution to the same problem the previous post had. Spent hours at the Microsoft, Adobe and other tech sites. I tried the permission deal  with the registry with no success. I even saw the page your kink direct us to, but I told myself, I already messed with the REG. After reading both post, I went back to your link and read further into the article, tried a few step with no luck. As you, don't give up. Tried a few more steps and PRESTO, Adobe Reader finally installed. As with the other poster, my Thanks and gratitude for the info you provided.
