Please post the full and exact text of the error message.  We need to know which program is causing the error in shell.dll.

What is pcbank.exe?  Is this an older 16-bit program that you are trying to run in Windows XP?  Has this program ever run sucessfully in Windows XP?  Have you tried running it in compatibility mode?

Thank u again for responding. This program ran fine up until about 2 weeks ago. It is my online banking software.  They sent me new software and it is doing the samething with the new software.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

Did you uninstall the old software (using Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs) before installing the new software?  Usually it is best to do this so that remnants of the old software are not left on the computer to cause conflicts.

Possible cure:

Uninstall PCBank (from Programs/PCBank, if available)  and reboot. Run this command from Start/Run:

msconfig

On the "General" tab hit the Expand File button. Enter these 'entries' in the 3 boxes provided and then hit Expand.

shell.dll

c:\windows\system32\dllcache

c:\windows\system32

Restart computer, as suggested. Re-install newer version of PCBank.

When I try to open Pagemaker, it won't open it and I get the message 'Cannot find SHELL.DLL'.

Also, when I try to open Corel Draw, it won't open it and I get the same message 'Cannot find SHELL.DLL'. I then sometimes get the message 'Cannot find C:\COREL50\PROGRAMS\CORELDRW.EXE (or one of its components). Check to ensure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.'

Please help!

Thanks.

Thank you very much for your reply. I am using Windows XP and I do get automatic updates. I'm sorry to be so ignorant but how do you do a 'system recovery'?

I had the same problem.  If you are using Windows XP and get automatic updates try a system recovery to at least May 25. I think microsoft sent something that caused the problem.

No problem...from desktop...Start..Accessories..System tools...System restore..next(restore my computer...) Back arrow on calendar to May..Select a date say May 25 or before...next.     Note you will have to reload any software you have downloaded post May 25.   Hope this is a help....Good Luck!

I too am getting the Shell.dll error on start up.  I have tried all of the suggestions posted in this thread so far but no luck.  I am also getting a second error on start up   "error loading c:\windows\d3ex32.dll  specific module could not be found."  I do not currently get automatic updates so I have not tried the system resore yet.  Thanks for any help you may have to give.
