Please don't shout at the people trying to help you!  You really haven't told us what you are doing to make this happen, but I will offer a guess.  Are you changing the device connected to your cable modem?  The reason I ask, is that the ip address you gave 192.168.xxx.xxx is the address you would be expected to get from a router.  In the your shouting message, above, you say you can connect through Comcast, a cable internet provider.   If you are changing the device connected to a cable modem, you must reset the cable modem by turning it off, waiting a few minutes and then turning it on before you turn on the device connected to the modem.   The reason for this is that the cable Modem will remember the MAC address of the last device connected to it.  If you connect with the computer directly to the modem, then the modem remembers the MAC address of the your ethernet card.  If you then switch to a router, then the modem will try to connect, but since the router has a different MAC address than the one it remembers, it will not provide a valid IP address to the router.  The problem is solved if everytime you change the device connected to the modem, you turn off the modem and all other devices, wait a few minutes, turn on the modem and wait for it to sychronize again with your isp, then turn on the device connected to the modem and any other devices on the network.

If this is not your problem, I am sorry to have tried to guess.

I am NOT shouting at anyone as everyone so far has been of help.....

I have a router and Comcast and everything worked fine until recently... also, I have tried a disconnect and re- install of the modem and the Winsock settings....

I have re-installed the Winsock 2.0...

The connection still shows me to be on line, and working, but when I try to connect to say "Yahoo", the " no page display" message appears... when I repair the connection, it says the repair task cannot be completed because "the DNS cache cannot be cleared"...

I have 2006 Norton's SystemWorks installed and the associated 2006 Norton's Firewall software... Could it be this causing the problem?

Any further help would be most appreciated... thanks

TR

Norton System Works has invariably caused problems on every system I ever used it on.  But, before checking that you might want to make sure the your DNS client service is running correctly.   Go to Start > Run and type services.msc the click OK.  Double click on the DNS client service and make sure its startup type is set to Automatic and that it is started.   If it is already started, stop the service, reboot the computer and check to see if it starts after the reboot and if you can now sucessfully connect to web sites.

In checking my internet setup, my DNS Client Service appears to be shaded. What does this mean and how do  I correct it?

Does Steve's solution correct this problem?

Thanks....

What do you mean it "appears to be shaded"?  Are you logged on to an account with administrator privileges?  Can you not stop or start the service?

To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

That IP output looks good.  You are getting an IP address from the router and the router is passing along the proper DNS server addresses. Can you get to any other sites besides yahoo using that connection? In other words to some sites work but others don't?

no sites as msn or yahoo will open....

DNS Client shaded again...

IP repair connection still gives error saying again "cannot clear DNS cache" and

ipconfig/flushdns says: function fails during execution...

I am learning alot of IT stuff but the problem still is with me...

Should I re install XP? Thanks

This is sounding more and more like a virus or spyware problem.   Download, install, update, and run the free versions of Ad-Aware and Spybot and let these programs remove all of the garbage that they find.

If these programs don't solve the problem, go Here and follow the directions to download and run the analysis tool called HijackThis. Generate a log file, then open it and copy and paste the text of the log file in a message in the HijackThis forum where a HijackThis expert can offer advice on how to fix the problem.
